Hillary Lam art process

Expressive drawing
I chose to do watercolor because of the fluidity and blending that comes with watercolor. This adds more room to be expressive and you can do many things with watercolor depending on your brush size, amount of water, and colors. Watercolor can be light and transparent but can be intense as well depending on what you are trying to express with your piece. My concept with the intensity of the eyes and simple pose relates to me being introverted but passionate as well. My different choices of cool colors such as the deep purples, blues and pinks were inspired while listening to rock music.
Expressive self-portrait in process
Cubist inspired process painting
My inspiration behind this painting came from the landscape of Santorini, Greece. I incorporated the cubist buildings in the still life and used brush techniques of Paul Cézanne. With this piece I am trying to not focus on having each brush stroke be perfect and that messiness is part of the painting.

  1. The colors used in this painting are really beautiful, I like the contrast between the deep blues and purples and the pinks. Also, the detail and texture of the eyes were done really well!

  2. This looks really awesome I love the blues and purples it really brings out the brown. I'm a little confused as to what's going on in the side, it looks cool but from what there is now Im not sure where your going from there so I'd love to see what you do with it. Also are you doing the rest of your face? Personally I like just having the eyes there since the colors are so vibrant and just well pop but I'd also love to see what else you'd do with the rest of your face.

  3. Hi Hillary I think you are doing a great job with details, colors, and water control. I don't have too much to say right now because I know you are working on the rest of the face, but how much of the face do you want to show? Are you planning on including hair, or ears? Shoulders? I almost feel as though it would look better incomplete. Nevertheless I am very impressed by how well you are doing with the water color. Good job!

    1. Thanks! I agree with you on how it would look better a little incomplete. I'm planning on the nose and mouth but not entirely sure on the face and hair. I feel they would take away from the intensity of the eyes.

  4. I really like how you used the watercolors to create a soft feel to the painting. The colors makes it look like makeup or a mask the your eyes are hiding behind. Maybe try making the rest of the painting really light and subtle to make your eyes the main focus and stand out the most. Your detail is really cool.

  5. Hey Hillary I really like the way that you challenged the colors in your art piece. The eyes look expressive but yet very realistic. I also like your color decisions

  6. Your art process is particularly appealing. I love how you experiment with shades of blue and purple and the dripping effect you have created around the eyes. The eyes themselves are incredibly realistic. I hope you continue to be inspired by these cool colors and I can't wait to see the final project

  7. As some of the others have said, I really like the presence of the various watercolors. They work to give the portrait a sort of soft, delicate feeling that adds to the piece of art as a whole. The portrait has a tranquil life to it. Amazing work.

  8. I like how you used cool colors to display emotion in this piece and give it a sad feel. I like the little hint of pink/red to add a little anger to subject's sadness. Nice Job!

  9. I really like how in your expressive drawing you added come pink/red color It really adds an interesting element to it and make it pop out more. The movement is also really interesting, because it causes your eyes follow all around the drawing.

  10. Hey Hillary, I really like the way the colors came together in your drawing. I also like the watercolor on the side of the face it makes a cool transition into the rest of your expressive drawing.

  11. I really love the colors you use within this painting, at first glance it looks as if you're just painting a scene within Greece, but the more i look at it the more interesting it becomes. I really like the orientation of the buildings i think that it really adds a surreal like effect to the painting. It also works very well with all the details you've put in( the messy brush strokes actually work better then clear cut lines in my opinion) . I was wondering if you're just keeping the painting on one side, to be honest i really like the blue, i'm wondering you could use it as more then just the sky. I feel like that would add a very interesting twist to the paint. Well over all amazing job and hope my suggestions help a little. :3

  12. Your cubist painting is really beautiful! I like the colors that you used, especially the vibrant blue and i also liked how you used a different style of brush strokes which makes it look more relaxed. I know this is still in progress but are you going to add anything to the right side? i feel like the painting feels unbalanced right now so maybe you could add something on the other side.

  13. I love your cubism piece. I really like your inspiration of the the buildings in Greece. Are you planning to make the rest of the painting as tight and having the buildings really close like how they are now? I think that you should leave some blue space because if the rest of the painting is like that it might be a bit overwhelming. Maybe add a beach at the very right so it will give a break of the buildings.

  15. I love the detail you used in the cubist piece. I love all of the contrasting colors and bright whites you used next to the blue. I also like your expressive self portrait. I love how you let the paint run down the page.
