February Vacation art events

Peabody Essex Museum

Hart Rippe

If your in town, these events are worthwhile to attend.  I went to the PEM and saw the Shapeshifting exhibition. This exhibit really opened my eyes about how important culture and tradition are to the Native Americans.  I was in awe at how they were able to adapt to Western culture but still not lose their cultural identity. In a way, they learned how to blend both tradition and contemporary approaches of their art and culture.  Quite a spectacle !

Decordova Museum

The DeCordova Museum holds its Biennial as a showcase for 23 selected regional artists.   If you are curious about more contemporary approaches to art making, this is the place to visit.  I was most captivated by the South End Knitters.

Catherine Zhao, hand-made paper fold

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

Two years in the making, “The True Cost of Coal” is an elaborate narrative illustration that explores the complex story of mountaintop removal coal mining and the broader impacts of coal in Appalachia and beyond. The image is the culmination of an intensive and collaborative research process, as the Beehive methodology centers on first hand story-sharing. To create the poster, the Beehive interviewed hundreds of community members throughout the Appalachia region. “We feel it’s extremely important to gather our information from as close to the source as possible,” a Beehive illustrator says.

Johnathan Sheiman process pieces

Here I try to make some of my abstract work take on human- like forms, with my latest experiment being on a large gesso board. I started with vein- like structures and hope to continue to have the flow into a section of the shoulder with muscle strands and veins that connect to the central point. I like flow in my pieces, with a central focal point, and I try to almost make the image of my pieces in a viewer's head overwhelming with whats is filled on the canvas.

Varsity Art stencils

Thank you Jillian Belgrad and Baily Bickford for making the Varsity art stencil. For those who want to use the stencil, bring a shirt or you can print it on the back of your designed shirt. All Art 2, 3, 4 students qualify.

Happy Chinese New Year

Happy 2012 ! Year of the Dragon paper cut

Zodiac animal paper cut

Paper cutting is a traditional art that has evolved through-out the course of Chinese cultural development. Its origin should be closely connected with the invention of paper during the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-221 A.D.). As paper was highly precious in the early days, the art of paper cutting first became popular in the royal palaces and houses of nobility as a favorite pastime among court ladies. Later, during the 7th through 13th centuries, paper cutting was immensely popular during folk festivals and celebrations.
