Charlotte's Artshare post

Eugenia Loli is a California based collage artist. Her work is surreal, dreamlike, and imaginative. Her work is vibrant and weird- incorporating advertisements and magazine photos from the 1950s with bright landscapes or pictures of outer space. Her work is largely reliant on fantasy driven juxtaposition. She often replaces certain elements with similar shapes for completely new effects, as is the case with the collage above.
Loli has lived all over the world and derives inspiration from her world view and personal aesthetic. The end result are bizarre and creative collages that tease imagination and pull the viewer into their story.
Some collages are intricate and full of different sources. Others are more simple, yet interesting like the example below.
This collage is unique and full of different images that she has blended together to make a cohesive, yet busy atmosphere. The sources are clearly disparate- from Good House Keeping to old science textbooks- and yet the collage flows as a surreal image. There are plenty of things to look at and get lost in, and no one element steals all the viewers attention.

  1. Wow, I love this last piece! What a beautiful way of drawing the onlooker into the scene, staring out the window alongside the woman into the lovely chaos of the composition. I had never thought of replacing where I would normally put sky and an earthly landscape with a galaxy-scape. I think that I originally thought it would look cheesy. But here, she has pulled it off perfectly!
